History: Carol Bennett was an original board member of Ludington Visiting Writers and facilitator of the West Side Gang (second and fourth Tuesday critiques) writers group. She lost a long battle with cancer in 2011. This scholarship was established in her memory for the time she donated and the advice she gave to our group.

Details: The total value of the Scholarship shall be a minimum of $1,500.00 for 2024, but may be split among multiple applicants in the case of ties. It is not limited to residents of Mason County or to high school seniors! However, we do encourage seniors from Mason, Oceana, Manistee, and Lake counties to apply.

Scholarships will be awarded based on merit as determined from this application by the scholarship committee, regardless of race, creed, religion or lack thereof, country or region of origin, gender, gender identity, ethnicity, sexual preference, or political preference.

Applications will open February 1, 2024 close by 5:00 PM, April 1st, 2024.

Applicants will be notified of the results by May 1, 2024.

Applications must contain two copies of everything (both the application form and at least one piece of creative writing). Creative writing submissions shall consist of no more than 3 poems or 1,500 words of prose.

• Author’s name is ONLY on the application (not on the creative writing)

• Staple the application on the top of the creative writing sample

• All writing must be in 16 pt. font in Times New Roman

• Standard 8 1⁄2” by 11” page with 1” margins

• Upper right page numbers

• Separate titles are required for each different piece

• Use two or more stamps, include a return address, and mail the 2 copies in a 9” x 12” envelope to:
